Viva Las Vegas

5 Sep

(You have to say that, apparently, it’s the rule)

What can you say about Vegas?  Well, it started well, one of our party having to be rescued from the local police force… and then I waved goodbye to the Green Tortoise and all my new friends (now busy stalking me on Facebook) – leaving me to find my hostel at 3am.

The Sin City hostel.  Not a great name as a source of comfort and security – but a great hostel.  Wireless network was a bit dodgy, hence patchy updates, but no bunks, plenty of space, and some nice people!

So, I walked the length of the strip, taking in the free shows…. dodgy 70s disco at Fremont St but an amazing light show on the ‘biggest TV screen in the world’,and some dodgy lookalikes

the Sirens show at Treasure Island, and the wonderful Bellagio Fountains.  I have a bit of a soft spot for the Venetian, with a wonderful trompe l’oeil ceiling that really does look like a summer sky.

There really is a lot to see and do.. I tried to take a picture to capture the enormity of the size of the casinos… but it’s impossible to show the sheer scale and size – but there are around 200,000 slot machines in the city.  It’s near impossible to get out of the casinos which are poorly signposted.

So, a wonderful feat of engineering on behalf of Las Vegas… sorry, guys, but the canyons are still more beautiful, more entrancing and more spectacular.  God 1, Engineering 0

And, finally, a map of the route.  Roughly.

A San Francisco

B Zion National Park

C Bryce National Park

D Arches National Park

E San Juan River

F Monument Valley National Park

G Moab

H Lake Powell (this is wrong – it’s actually near Page)

I Grand Canyon National Park

J Las Vegas
