Riding the Greyhound

3 Aug

Yesterday, I took the Greyhound from Medford to San Francisco – around 360 miles, but 11 hours coach time… it’s quite an experience, the Greyhound… but definitely the cheapest way to do this  if you’re on your own (if there had been two of us, it would have been cheaper to rent a car and pay the one way fee (which would have been $150).

So, a quite beautiful trip down the spine of California ensued… most of the trip being dominated by Mt Shasta (can’t get away from those volcanoes) which rises as if out of nowhere.  We stopped at curious bus stops in the smallest towns, and in the middle of big cities…standing room only on the last 20 miles from Sacramento into San Francisco. I’m not sure my back is straight just yet…

Word to the wise though – make sure your accommodation is close to the bus station when you arrive – only a slightly scary walk through San Francisco at 2am and not 100% certain that my hostel would be staffed at that time – a night on the streets of San Francisco didn’t sound like the best end to the day.

(Volcanic fact – Everest is not the tallest mountain in the world….Hawaii’s Mauna Kea, rises an astonishing 33,476 feet (10,203 meters) from the depths of the Pacific Ocean floor compared to Everest’s 29,028 feet (8,848 meters) above sea level. Measuring from base to peak, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on earth)
